How Premium Same-Day Works

1
Apply online at gov.uk

Complete the full standard passport application online at gov.uk/renew-adult-passport. Select premium service. You will receive a PEX reference number after submission.

2
Book a passport office appointment

The earliest available appointment is typically 2 days after submitting your application. Go to gov.uk/book-a-passport-appointment with your PEX reference. Check all 7 office locations for availability.

3
Attend your appointment with all documents

Bring your PEX reference, current passport (or explanation if lost), two identical passport photos taken within the past month, confirmed travel proof (booking within 48 hours), and any supporting documents.

4
Wait at or near the passport office

After your appointment, processing takes approximately 4 hours. You collect your passport from the same office the same day.

Key Limitations - Read Before Booking

  • Adults only - Premium is not available for anyone under 18. Children needing fast turnaround must use fast track (£135.50, ~1 week).
  • Very limited slots - Premium appointments book out fast, especially March to August. Check all 7 offices.
  • Documents must be complete - If your paperwork is incomplete at the appointment, you will not receive a passport that day. The £239.50 fee is charged regardless.
  • Earliest appointment is 2 days away - You cannot get a same-day appointment on the day of submitting your application.
  • In-person collection only - Premium passports are collected at the passport office, not delivered by courier.

What to Bring to Your Appointment

  • Completed online application (PEX reference number)
  • Current passport (or explanation if lost/stolen)
  • Two identical passport photos taken within the past month
  • Proof of travel booking (dated within 48 hours of travel)
  • Supporting documents if your name has changed (marriage certificate, deed poll)
  • Payment confirmation (you pay online when booking)

What to Do If Premium Is Fully Booked

1. Check all 7 passport offices - London fills up fastest, while Durham and Newport typically have shorter waits.

2. Consider whether fast track (approximately 1 week) meets your need - some flexible travel plans can accommodate this.

3. Check if your travel can be postponed or rebooked with your airline or tour operator.

4. Call the HMPO helpline on 0300 222 0000 for advice on exceptional circumstances.
