10-Year vs 5-Year UK Passport: Cost and Which You Get

Adults always get 10-year passports. Children under 16 always get 5-year passports. No choice in the matter - here is what each costs in 2026.

The simple answer

All adults (16+) automatically receive a 10-year passport for £102 online. All children (under 16) automatically receive a 5-year passport for £66.50 online. There is no option to choose your validity period.

Cost Per Year of Validity - April 2026

Passport typeOnline costValidityCost per year
Adult passport (16+)£10210 years£10.20/yr
Child passport (under 16)£66.505 years£13.30/yr

Child passports are cheaper upfront but more expensive per year of validity. This is partly why children's passports cost more relative to adults over a 10-year period.

Carry-Over Months: Get More Than 10 Years for £102

When you renew your adult passport before it expires, any remaining validity (up to 9 months) is added to your new 10-year passport.

10-Year Passport FAQs

How much does a 10-year passport cost in the UK?
£102 online or £115.50 by post from 8 April 2026. All adult passports are issued for 10 years. That is £10.20 per year of validity - among the cheapest in Europe when measured this way.
Can you still get a 5-year passport in the UK?
No, not for adults. Adult passports are 10-year only. Children under 16 receive 5-year passports automatically. The 5-year adult option was discontinued. There is no way to apply for a shorter validity adult passport.
Do unused months carry over when I renew my passport?
Yes. Up to 9 months of remaining validity is added to your new 10-year passport. Renew with 9 months left and your new passport runs for 10 years and 9 months for the same £102. Apply close to 9 months before expiry for maximum benefit.
When should I renew to get the most from my passport?
Renew when you have 9 months or less remaining - the maximum carry-over. Do not let your passport expire completely. You lose any remaining validity if it expires before you renew. Always renew at least 10 weeks before any planned travel to allow for standard processing.
