Changing Your Name on a UK Passport: 2026 Cost After Marriage or Divorce

Same cost as a full renewal. There is no separate name amendment - a new 10-year passport is issued and the old one cancelled.

Key fact

Important: unused validity is lost

If your current passport has 3 years remaining and you change your name after marriage, those 3 years are cancelled. A new 10-year passport starts from the issue date. You cannot carry over unused months from a name change application (unlike a standard renewal). If your passport has significant time remaining and you are not changing your name for travel purposes, consider whether it is worth waiting.

Documents You Need

  • Your current passport (to be cancelled on receipt)
  • Passport photo (digital via gov.uk app, or physical prints)
  • Marriage or civil partnership certificate (original or certified copy for marriage-related changes)
  • Deed poll (for deed poll changes - can be unenrolled)
  • Divorce decree and statutory declaration (for reverting after divorce)
  • Gender recognition certificate (for gender change applications)

The Application Process

1
Gather your documents

Collect your marriage certificate, current passport, and passport photo. Have digital copies ready.

2
Apply online at gov.uk as a standard renewal

Go to gov.uk/renew-adult-passport and select the option for a name change (or change of personal details). The process is the same as a standard renewal application.

3
Upload or post your supporting documents

Marriage certificates and other original documents may need to be posted or uploaded digitally depending on the type of change.

4
Wait up to 10 weeks

Standard processing takes up to 10 weeks. If you need it faster for an upcoming trip, fast track (£166.50) is available.

Timing Tip for Newlyweds

You do not need to change your passport name immediately after marriage. Many couples wait until their passport is close to expiry (within 9 months) to combine the name change with the regular renewal - saving a £102 application that would otherwise be redundant. Make sure your travel bookings match your current passport name in the meantime.
