Key Rules for Child Passports

5-year validity

Child passports are valid for 5 years, not 10. This catches many parents out. At age 16, teens must apply for an adult passport.

Countersignature required

All child applications need a countersignature from someone who has known the child 2+ years, holds a British or Irish passport, and is not a relative.

Parent or guardian applies

Children cannot apply independently until age 16. A parent or guardian must sign the application on their behalf.

At age 16: adult passport

From the 16th birthday, the child fee no longer applies. Adult rate (£102 online) applies, and they get a full 10-year adult passport.

Baby Passport: What New Parents Need to Know

There is no special "baby passport" - standard child passport rules apply from birth. Key points:

  • Babies need their own separate passport from birth. They cannot be added to a parent's passport.
  • Same £66.50 online cost as any child passport. No discount for very young children.
  • Countersignature still required even for newborns.
  • HMPO recommends applying at least 10 weeks before the baby's first trip.

Child vs Adult Passport: Age 15 vs 16

Planning tip: If your child is close to their 16th birthday (within 6 months), it may be worth waiting. An adult passport costs more upfront (£102 vs £66.50) but lasts twice as long and works out cheaper per year of validity.
